Fencing - Sabre
The sabre is one of the three weapons of fencing (the others being the épée and foil). The sabre differs from the two other weapons because it is possible to touch with something other than the tip of the blade: it is a thrusting, cutting and counter-cutting weapon (or point, edge and counter-edge). Like the foil, the sabre is a conventional weapon, i.e. it has priority rules to determine the priority of attack and therefore which of the two fencers will score the point. The sabre was the last weapon to switch to the use of electrical equipment to facilitate the detection of the touch. This was done from 1988, 31 years after foil and 52 years after épée.
