Fencing - Foil
The foil is one of the three weapons of fencing (the others being the épée and sabre). The foil is a conventional thrusting weapon with the characteristic of a square-based blade, used in the practice of fencing. At its origins, at the end of the 18th century, the foil was a weapon for training and studying fencing. Unlike the épée and sabre, the foil was not used on the battlefield or in duels. Until the end of the 19th century, the foil was the only fencing weapon women were authorised to use. Its name comes from the fact that its tip is protected by a button formerly called fleur de laine and today called mouche. This feature, now common to all weapons, allows for courteous assaults without risk of injury.
