Combat Sports - Judo
Judo was established as a physical, mental and moral pedagogy in Japan in 1882. It is generally categorised as a modern martial art, which later evolved into a combat and Olympic sport. Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the objective is to either throw or bring the opponent to the ground and immobilise him (Control Techniques), or to force him to give up using joint locks and chokes. The place where judo is practised is called the dojo. Practitioners known as judokas wear a reinforced cotton outfit called a judogi, or commonly known as “kimono”. The judogi is generally white, but to facilitate the distinction between the competitors in competitions, a judoka may wear a blue judogi in international competitions. During training and in competition, judokas exercise on a tatami, a stiff mat which absorbs shocks and delimits a square combat area with mats of different colours, with a minimum combat area of 64 square metres (8 x 8) and a maximum combat area of 100 square metres (10 x 10).
