Combat Sports
Combat sports are a family of sporting activities that usually involve a confrontation between two fighters as a competitive form. The notion of “combat sport” differs from that of martial art, although some disciplines include both facets. A martial art is, by definition, a “war art” based on a moral code that the fighters must respect. Because of the potential dangers involved, it is impossible to organise competitions unless there are facilities to make it a combat sport. A combat sport has rules aimed in particular at guaranteeing physical integrity. They are very often the subject of (opposition) competitions, and then have a referee to enforce the rules. The combat sport thus moves away from real combat on the one hand, but on the other hand, makes it possible to confront an opponent with unpredictable reactions and in a spirit of sportsmanship (fair play and respect).
